On an extremely wet day in St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point Community Pride held a Senior’s Week morning tea called “Memories of Times Past”. This event was made possible by a Shoalhaven City Council Seniors Week Grant.
While the rain pelted down, over 40 attendees enjoyed Nowra CWA’s delicious food and toe-tapping tunes from the local ukelele group, NukeM. Our MC for the day was David Wells, Community Pride Member and local celebrant who could elicit some fascinating stories. We heard of many special reminiscences, including childhood memories of winning a koala at a fair, experiencing the London Blitz, and making delicate handicrafts from those who brought their memorabilia. The morning tea was topped off with some spontaneous dancing from attendees.
Seeing so many people brave the elements and enjoy themselves at this fun morning tea was great. Community Pride received many thanks for running this event for local Seniors, and after receiving many requests, we will apply for another grant to repeat this next year.

Did you know …
Seniors Week dates back to the early 1960s when the first Senior Citizens Week was held in Victoria. Inspired by its success, other states and territories soon followed suit, and the concept of honouring seniors spread throughout the nation.
The exact origins and specific milestones of Seniors Week in Australia are not well-documented, but it has evolved over time to become a significant event on the national calendar. It typically includes a variety of activities and events aimed at promoting the well-being, social engagement, and active participation of older Australians. From health expos to art exhibitions, seminars to sporting events, Seniors Week offers a diverse range of opportunities for seniors to connect, learn, and celebrate.
