Still Waiting: Sanctuary Point Library Project Delayed Again

“How long should a community have to wait for something so essential?”
— Christine McInerney-Percy, Vice President, Sanctuary Point Community Pride Inc.

The dream of a new library for Sanctuary Point has again been put on hold, leaving many residents frustrated and disappointed. Despite a long and determined campaign, strong community backing, and even federal funding in place, the Shoalhaven City Council voted 7:6 in April 2025 not to proceed with the latest design for the new library.

Why a New Library Matters

Though much loved, the current Sanctuary Point Library is tiny and outdated. Our region is growing, and with that growth comes a need for modern, accessible community spaces. Libraries today aren’t just about books. They offer safe, welcoming places for all ages, with free access to:

  • Technology and the internet
  • Study and meeting spaces
  • Children’s programs and activities
  • Social connections and lifelong learning

“Libraries are more than shelves of books,” Christine McInerney-Percy said. “They’re places where people come to study, read, connect, and feel welcome. Our community needs and deserves a space like that.”

A Close Call—And a Step Back

Shoalhaven Councillors rejected the latest design in a narrow vote on 15 April 2025. Instead, they decided to explore alternate sites—including Francis Ryan Reserve and the site of the existing library, which sits on Department of Education land. Meanwhile, time is ticking on the $7.5 million federal grant secured by MP Fiona Phillips. If the project stalls too long, we risk losing this much-needed funding.

“We are not choosing a library over change rooms or any other facilities,” Christine clarified. “We support all infrastructure in Sanctuary Point. But this library is urgently needed—and the community has waited long enough.”

What’s Next?

Sanctuary Point Community Pride will join Friends of Sanctuary Point Library to campaign for the completion of this much-needed project. We must act while federal funding is still available.

“We’re not giving up,” said Christine McInerney-Percy. “We’ll continue working with Friends of Sanctuary Point Library and our broader community to advocate for the project. We’re encouraging residents to write to Councillors, sign the petition, and let their voices be heard.”
