Local Bus Services – Getting Around Sanctuary Point and Beyond

Public transport plays a vital role in keeping our community connected. Whether you’re heading to school, commuting to work, visiting friends, or exploring the beautiful Bay & Basin area, our local bus services are a convenient and accessible way to travel.

This page brings together the essential information you need: route links, trip planning tools, local operator details, and real-time updates. It also features the new Sanctuary Point Community Pride bus map, created to help both locals and visitors navigate our area with confidence.

Community Bus Map

Below is the map we created to help residents and visitors easily visualise where our local buses go.

The map is a simplified diagram. For exact street-level routing, please use Transport for NSW Trip Planner or your bus operator’s website.

Acknowledgement – FRRR & the IRCF Program

The creation and installation of our upgraded Local Bus Map at the Wool Road / Naval College Road roundabout was made possible through the generous support of the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) and their Investing in Rural Community Futures (IRCF) program.

Transport access has long been identified as a key issue for the Bay & Basin community. This new sign has been developed to:

  • Educate residents and visitors about our local bus services
  • Promote the use of public transport as a practical travel option
  • Improve access to essential services, especially for those without private transport
  • Support a more connected and mobile community

Sanctuary Point Community Pride extends sincere thanks to FRRR and the IRCF program for helping make this valuable community asset possible.

Useful Information about local buses

Plan Your Bus Trip

The easiest way to plan any bus journey in NSW is through the official Transport for NSW tools.

Transport for NSW Trip Planner

View timetables, plan trips, see walking connections, and check real-time bus arrivals.

Real-Time Tracking

Many local buses are now fitted with GPS through the Transport Connected Bus program, allowing you to see exactly when your bus will arrive.

Fares & Payments

Public transport bus services in the Shoalhaven region do not use the Opal card system, as we fall outside the Opal network.

Here’s how fares work on our local buses:

  • Fares are paid directly to the driver when boarding.
  • You can pay using:
    • Cash
    • Credit or debit card (depending on the operator and vehicle)
  • Drivers can advise you of the correct fare for your trip.
  • Concession fares apply for eligible passengers (students, pensioners, seniors, etc.).
  • School students may be eligible for free travel under the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS).
  • Check your operator’s website for fare tables and accepted payment methods:

School Bus Services

If your child uses a school bus, the following resources will help you plan their route:

Tips for Travellers

Before You Travel

  • Check the timetable ahead of time and allow a few extra minutes for unexpected delays.
  • Plan your route using the Transport for NSW Trip Planner to confirm times and connections.
  • Have your payment ready (cash or card, depending on the operator).

How to Hail a Bus

In the Shoalhaven, you do not need to be standing beside an official bus stop sign—many local stops are unmarked. Passengers may hail the bus from any safe location along the route. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Stand somewhere visible to the driver, ensuring it is safe for the bus to pull over (e.g., not on a bend or directly beside parked cars).
  2. When you see your bus approaching, look toward the driver and raise your arm clearly to signal.
  3. Keep your arm raised until the driver slows down or signals acknowledgment.
  4. Step back slightly from the roadway and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding.
  5. If you do not clearly signal, the bus may continue without stopping.

Getting Off the Bus

  • Allow passengers in mobility seats or with prams extra time to exit.
  • Press the stop button a little before your stop so the driver has time to pull over safely.
  • Gather your belongings before the bus stops.
